The Door County YMCA’s CEO, Tom Beerntsen, has announced his intention to retire this upcoming March 31st. Beerntsen has served in this position for the last 6+ years and has a lifetime of work history in the YMCA organization. He also owned an operated a family-owned confectionery business in Manitowoc from 1983 to 2003, a business his family has operated since 1932. Prior to working in the family business, Beerntsen served as a YMCA Director in Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Also, from 2001 to 2003 he served as Chairman of the Board for the “YMCA Of the USA” where, as an officer, he would travel 100 days a year serving as the primary volunteer ambassador. Door County YMCA Board President Mike Felhofer comments, “During his tenure, Tom improved the visibility and image of the door county YMCA, helped build a strong staff, improved staff culture, improved the physical facilities and implemented a new long-range strategic plan leading to a high of 9,000 members pre-pandemic.” Felhofer also said the board staff and members will miss the leadership of Tom and his wife, Penny, and their ability to make each person feel so special. The Door County YMCA Board of Directors is now currently accepting applications for the upcoming open position of CEO.
