In a recent press release from Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding, they share the news that a formal christening for the Washington Island Ferry Line’s new vessel, the Madonna, took place at Bay Shipbuilding Monday in a private ceremony. This new ferry measures 124 ft. in length, 40 ft. in beam, and 9 ft. in draft. It has a capacity for 28 vehicles and 150 passengers. The Madonna is the largest vessel in the Washington Island Ferry fleet which now allows crews to operate a spacious second ferry with year-round capabilities. All current operating ferry vessels in the fleet were built in Sturgeon Bay. This is the 3rd built by Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding and there were 2 built by Peterson Builders. Bay Shipbuilding Vice President and General Manager Todd Thayse says, “The work done on the new ferry has exemplified our quality and standards, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. Our workforce was able to stay on schedule for an on-time delivery, which is commendable during this challenging time.”
