For as long as people can remember, a small plot of land in Sturgeon Bay used for football practice has been called “the rock pile.” Now, by action of the Sturgeon Bay City Council Tuesday evening, the land adjacent to Memorial Field has been designated as “Hoot” field in honor of John Utnehmer. “Hoot”, as most people know him, has given decades of his life to young athletes as a basketball, football & baseball coach. More than a coach, Utnehmer has been a mentor to many of the youngsters who were lucky enough to know him. The hope is that “Hoot” field can be upgraded so that future generations will forget about the rock pile & remember the man who has dedicated his life to young people & athletics for close to 40 years.
