Stabbing Suspect Must Undergo Mental Evaluation

A 67 year old Southern Door County man will be evaluated to determine if he is competent to stand trial on a charge of attempted murder. John Van Iten is accused of stabbing his wife at their home off of Claflin Park Road on November 1st. He allegedly told investigators that he would finish the job if ever given the opportunity. His 67 year old wife sustained a serious wound to the abdomen after being stabbed while in the bathroom of their home. She was rushed to Saint Vincent Hospital in Green Bay where she is on the mend. John Van Iten said god told him to stab his wife. He said god spoke to him through television, magazines & dreams. The couple was preparing to leave for Texas when the stabbing occurred. The Wisconsin department of Health Services will conduct the competency evaluation. Their report must be ready in time for van Iten’s next court date on December 6th at 9AM. He remains in the door County jail on $2.5 million bail.
