The exploration of the historic shipwreck of the Adriatic has begun in Sturgeon Bay. Divers from the Wisconsin Historical Society & Eastern Carolina University are in Sturgeon Bay to examine what is left of the schooner which lies in the shallow water off of Bay Shipbuilding.
The public is invited to meet the exploration team at an open house Thursday evening, hosted by the Door County Maritime Museum from 7PM to 9PM. The divers will share their work on the site plan & show pictures & video of the wreck, & answer questions about the vessel & its history.
For the next two weeks, divers will spend time measuring, sketching, taking pictures & mapping the Adriatic. The three masted schooner-barge was built in 1889 & converted to a self unloading barge in 1914. The ship was retired & then abandoned in about 1930 in the waters of Sturgeon Bay, where she eventually rotted & sank.
