An eight person committee of the Door County Board voted unanimously Friday to engage an outside counsel to initiate an investigation into the conduct of County Administrator Michael Serpe. The Administrative Services Committee also voted to place Serpe on administrative leave with pay during the investigation. No word yet as to what precipitated the committee to hastily call the closed door meeting which lasted more than two hours. Serpe who is 62, came to Door County from Kenosha and has been Door County Administrator for 6 years.
Members of the committee declined to comment on their action, but Door County Corporation Counsel Grant Thomas indicated that the county would issue a statement. However it was implied that not much would be said while Serpe is being investigated.
The agenda for the meeting at the government center in Sturgeon Bay also indicated that an evaluation would be made to determine whether or not Serpe’s conduct of the county administration is satisfactory. However, when it was decided to seek the help of an outside counsel, it was decided to forgo that agenda item.
