Last week’s destructive thunderstorm on the evening of Tuesday, May 21st caused damage throughout Door County, and now the National Weather Service has confirmed that their further analyzed data confirms a tornado occurred on Washington Island just after 10:30PM that night. Rated as an EF1 intensity tornado, the wind speed was reportedly up to 90 MPH . For about 2 minutes, the incident caused numerous uprooted trees, snapped tree trunks, and damaged some buildings. The width of the tornado was estimated at about 50 yards and it traveled a path from the east shore of Detroit Harbor in a north-to-northeast direction, just over 2 miles towards the center of the island. There were no injuries reported from this incident, but there were widespread power outages across the island, some for many days.
