No Rifles for Hunters on Washington Island

For deer hunters on Washington Island, there will be no changes in the way the hunt is conducted in 2013. What that means is that rifles will not be allowed. The past practice of allowing shotguns, pistols or muzzle loaders continues. Based on a recent state statute, municipalities were given the option of allowing rifles during the hunt. But some island residents expressed concern about the use of the guns near populated areas, given the distance that rifle slugs can travel. The town board decided that it was a valid concern & agreed to ban rifles.
