We recently spoke with Sturgeon Bay elementary school counselor Karlie Martens about maintaining and improving mental health services in Sturgeon Bay schools now during the pandemic. Martens told us all school counselors in the district provide classroom guidance and social skills sessions. Every week she provides this type of instruction which can continue through high school. Martens discusses this instruction and how they monitor for problems……
She says the students are mostly very resilient dealing with all the changes this last year, but there is still a noticeable impact dealing with pandemic difficulties……
With this rise in mental health concerns, they have partnered with some community services, including the united way……
Martens says many schools across the county are working to get mental health counselors into their buildings because the need is there, especially during a public health emergency.
