Meeting to Discuss Dredging on Washington Island

A public meeting to consider a plan to dispose of dredge spoils from a dredging project on the Detroit Harbor navigation channel is set for Tuesday at the Mosling Recreation Center on Washington Island. The Department of Natural Resources has scheduled the session for 2:30PM. The own of Washington has requested that the DNR grant an exemption from solid waste regulations so that 134,500 cubic yards of material can be disposed of on town property located north of Gunnlaugsson Road & south of the town’s recycling facility. The purpose of the meeting is to solicit public comment on the town’s proposal. Representatives of the DNR & the town will first provide a brief introduction & explanation of the project, then the meeting will be opened up for questions & comments. The dredging project is intended to improve access to the harbor for the Washington Island Ferry Line as well as meeting other navigational needs.
