A 29 year old Washington Island man was sentenced to 30 days in jail & fined $1,500 & costs in connection with the theft of large sums of cash from the Washington Island Ferry Line. Jason Carr pleaded no contest to three theft counts in Door County circuit court on Thursday. Judge Peter Diltz also told him to maintain full employment & make restitution. Carr was originally charged with 39 counts of theft & forgery in connection with ripoffs beginning in 2006 & continuing into June of 2010. While an audit was able to identify more than $18,000 in losses, the Ferry Line, & Carr himself, believed the total figure was larger, perhaps as much as $25,000. According to the court complaint, Carr was able to access old Ferry Line software in order to print fake tickets. When a customer paid in cash, he would provide a phony ticket for passage on the island ferry & pocket the cash.
