Man Overcome At Bay Shipbuilding

Sturgeon Bay Firefighters were sent to Bay Shipbuilding Tuesday morning after a contract worker was overcome while working in a confined space on the ship “Kay Barker.” Five units and 17 firefighters were paged out that 8:19am. The 36-year old man had been cleaning a fuel tank when he lost consciousness about 15 feet inside the long a narrow fuel tank.

The department’s Confined Space Rescue Team was able to remove the man from a 16 by 18 inch opening in the tank and was turned over to paramedics for transport to Ministry Door County Medical Center. No word as to the man’s condition or prognosis.

Fire crews were back at the station after 9am.
