Large Salmon Die off at Fish Facility

More than 1,700 salmon died over the weekend at Sturgeon Bay’s Strawberry Creek salmon facility. DNR Warden Chris Kratcha says, despite every effort to provide oxygenated water, the sheer volume of chinook salmon depleted oxygen levels, leading to the die-off in the pond. The Department of Natural Resources has been harvesting eggs at the site & close to 3,000 live fish have been netted as part of the program. Warden Kratcha says millions of eggs have been taken as part of the three-day effort. The dead fish were trucked to a nearby fertilizer plant.
