Earlier this year, the Sturgeon Bay Historical Society requested that Sturgeon Bay’s Ahnapee & Western Train Depot be designated as a historic structure. Last month, the city’s Historic Preservation Commission held a public hearing to gather input regarding this proposed designation. That hearing indicated that the building does hold historical and architectural significance for the community. Most recently, at Wednesday night’s commission meeting, the commission voted unanimously to recommend designating the depot as a historic structure to the city’s common council.
The depot was built around 1913 and has seen many occupants over the last 100+ years, but it is currently the property of Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding. The old depot is not in Bay Ship’s future plans and they are open to its relocation. Once this historic designation is recommended to the common council, they will ultimately decide whether or not the depot is designated a historic structure. If this designation is made, then any future alterations, relocation, or demolition of the depot would require commission approval.
