Fire Prevention Week Starts Sunday

Fire Prevention Week will be observed across the nation, from Sunday to Saturday, next week. The annual event focuses on the need for all of us to keep fire safety in mind. The theme for Fire Prevention Week in 2013 is “Prevent Kitchen Fires”. The National Fire Protection Association says fire prevention week was established in 1922 to remember the death and devastation caused by the “Great Chicago Fire” on October 8th of 1871. However, the Great Peshtigo Fire, on the same day, caused more than four times as many deaths (1,152) and scorched more than 1,200,000 acres.

All next week, Sturgeon Bay Fire Chief Tim Herlache will help us by providing some common sense fire safety tips. Firefighters in the area will be out in the schools, talking to children about fire prevention, and giving them some basic tools that could help in the event of a fire.
