Fire Destroys Scissors Lift Wednesday

A scissors lift was destroyed in a fire at a building under construction at Hatco Corporation in Sturgeon Bay Wednesday evening. A scissors lift is a motorized platform that can be extended upward to reach above ground locations. The fire call came in at 5:38PM & the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department sent two units & a crew of six firefighters. They were told that, earlier in the day, workers had filled the machine with diesel fuel. Later, sparks from torches being used overhead ignited the fuel & hydraulic tanks on the scissors lift. The fire crew used 750 gallons of water & a small amount of class “B” foam to put out the blaze. The scissors lift is considered a total loss & some beams on the new building may also need to be replaced. No damage estimate is available. Firefighters returned to the station at 6:20PM.
