The investigation is continuing into an early morning fire Sunday that damaged Wanda Jean’s Restaurant on Egg Harbor Road in Sturgeon Bay. At about 3:17AM, a passerby alerted a Sturgeon Bay Police officer to heavy smoke in the area of the restaurant at 846 Egg Harbor Road. The officer checked the building & found smoke & flames in the rear of the structure. A general alarm was issued & seven units & twenty three firefighters were sent to the restaurant. They entered the building by way of the front door in order to keep the fire from spreading from the back to the front of the building. Most of the operation focused on two attic areas & a section of fire about 20 feet across. Only 340 gallons of water was needed to douse the blaze which never got to the restaurant itself. There was smoke damage throughout the building, but the structural damage, primarily the roof area, was listed as minimal. Fire Chief Tim Herlache says, upon request, the Egg Harbor Fire Department sent it’s aerial truck because the Sturgeon Bay aerial was being serviced. However, the fire was out so quickly that Egg Harbor’s vehicle was not needed. No injuries were reported. Fire Crews were back at the station at 6:13AM. “Wanda Jean” told WDOR News that she wasn’t sure how long it would take for repairs, it could be at least a month, but the restaurant will be back in business.
