Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding recently announced a partnership with Crowley Maritime Corporation to construct the largest liquified natural gas bunkering barge ever built in the United States. The current transformative design for this 416-ft. vessel will allow for 12,000 cubic meters (over 3 million gallons) of liquified natural gas. When completed, it will be the largest “Jones Act-compliant” vessel of its kind, and it will expand current network capacity for this fuel and meet demands for cleaner energy. In 2002, Bay Ship designed and constructed 2 large articulated tug-barges for Crowley. Bay Ship is also currently nearing completion of a similar but smaller liquified natural gas barge, the “Clean Canaveral”, for Polaris New Energy. This new vessel for Crowley is expected to be ready sometime in 2024. Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding Vice President and General Manager Todd Thayse comments, “We are pleased Crowley selected our team at Bay Shipbuilding to execute this important and highly visible project.”
