Wednesday afternoon, shortly after 2:40, the Door County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a serious vehicle crash on Highway 42 north of Walker Road in the town of Sevastopol. Upon arrival, deputies found a white 2019 Ford Flex with heavy damage in the west ditch. The vehicle had been driven by a 78 year-old Florida man and he was the lone occupant. He was later pronounced dead at the scene… Deputies also found a black 2021 Ford Explorer in the west ditch. The Explorer had been driven by a 60 year-old male. He was transported by ambulance to Door County Medical Center and was airlifted to a Green Bay hospital for treatment for his injuries. A 53-year old female passenger was transported by ambulance to the Door County Medical Center for treatment.
The initial investigation indicated that the Ford Flex had been traveling northbound when it crossed the centerline and struck the rear tires of a trailer of a semi that was heading southbound. After striking the trailer, the Ford Flex then struck the Ford Explorer which had been traveling southbound. The Ford Explorer had pulled onto the shoulder prior to impact in an attempt to avoid colliding with the Ford Flex. The Wisconsin State Patrol Crash Reconstruction Unit was contacted to assist with the crash investigation… Highway 42 was re-opened around 8 PM.
The incident remains under investigation and the name of the deceased is not being released at this time pending notification of next-of-kin.
The Sevastopol First Responders, Sturgeon Bay Fire Department, Door County Emergency Services, Door County Highway Department and Door County Sheriff’s Office all responded.
