Door County YMCA to Begin Work on Community Park

The Door County YMCA has announced that is moving ahead with a construction project on a ten acre parcel of land north of its Sturgeon Bay program center. The YMCA says work on the property is expected to begin during the second week in July. The YMCA owned & managed property will be a park for the community & be named in honor of Carla & Ellsworth Peterson. A gift from the well-known YMCA benefactors funded acquisition of the parcel in 2013 & will fully fund the initial phase of construction & improvements. Those improvements include installation of additional walking paths, a new sports field, a restroom facility, a small amphitheater for exercise classes & youth programming, & preparation of the site to accommodate a playground, multi-purpose sports court, sand volleyball, & a splash pad in the future. When the park opens in the spring of 2015 it will include nearly three quarters of a mile of walking paths. Rass Excavating will be general contractor for the park project. A ground breaking ceremony is planned for Monday, July 7th.
