The jury trial in the case of the State of Wisconsin vs Brian Cooper is scheduled to begin this morning at 8:15 at the Government Center in Sturgeon Bay. Cooper is charged with 2 counts of first degree intentional homicide and 1 count of third degree sexual assault in connection with the death last year of 21 year-old Alisha Bromfield at a southern Door County resort. The jury was selected last week in Wood County after the defense attorney requested and out-of-town jury due to pre-trial news reports about the case. The trial is expected to last all this week.
Cooper had originally entered a plea of ‘not guilty by reason of mental defect or disease’, but on Friday the plea was withdrawn and the trial will go on as scheduled.
