The city of Sturgeon Bay will pay just under $608,000 to upgrade North 4th Avenue, beginning in April. City engineer Tony Depies told the city council Tuesday that the low bidder for the project to install sewer & water services, sidewalk, curbs & the road deck was Peter’s Concrete of Green Bay…
The difference between the low bid & the final bid agreed to was an additional $10,500 to cover an error in the bid specifications related to gravel. The city could also have saved $82,000 by having an asphalt road bed rather than concrete, but Depies felt that asphalt had a shorter life expectancy & requires more intermittent maintenance. The city engineer also noted road projects in Door County tend to cost more…
Of the total cost of the street project, Sturgeon Bay Utilities will pick up a little less than $186,524.

Sturgeon Bay City Council
Alderman John Lodl finished with 70 votes in primary balloting Tuesday, but was defeated in his attempt to be elected to a seat on the Sturgeon Bay city council in the 2nd aldermanic district. District 2 incumbent Ron Vandertie led the way with 147 votes, followed by Cindy Weber who picked up 86 votes & will challenge Vandertie in the April election. Lodl, who will represent the city in the 3rd aldermanic district into April of next year, was placed in the position of finishing out his current term on the city council or running for the district 2 seat when his home was redistricted out of the 3rd aldermanic district. A total of 304 votes were cast during the election Tuesday.

Southern Door School Board
A newcomer, a former school board president & two incumbents will vie for two seats on the Southern Door board of education as a result of primary election voting Tuesday. Polly Alberts led the slate of five candidates in balloting, picking up a total of 413 votes. Chuck Bretl, who was a Southern Door school board member for a dozen years & served as its president, came in second with 320 votes. The two incumbents, Dawn Starr & Lori Sampo finished within 12 votes of each other to round out the list of candidates who will be on the ballot in the spring election. Starr had 273 votes & Sampo 261. Former board member Perry Degrave’s 128 votes were not enough to allow him to continue on to the election in April.

It didn’t just happen that the Sturgeon Bay Skatepark Initiative selected Grindline Skatepark Design & Construction to develop plans for a new skatepark on the west side of the city. Matt Young, co-chairman of the local organization, says the group wanted to get a nationally known design company. He says a lot of research was done & the group was impressed with Grindline’s creativity, professionalism & integrity & their commitment to working with all stakeholders. During a special open house at Sturgeon Bay city hall last week, Micah Shapiro, Grindline’s lead designer talked with WDOR news about his company’s track record…
Grindline has also designed & built award winning parks from Orcas Island to Okinawa, Japan to Copenhagen, Denmark. The hope is that, if all goes well, work on the skatepark near the westside field in Sturgeon Bay can be constructed during the summer of 2013.

Josh Gasser led Wisconsin with 15 points, while Jared Berggren added 13 and both Jordan Taylor and Ryan Evans chipped in 11. Mike Bruesewitz pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds. Next up for the Wisconsin men, is a trip to Iowa Thursday night.
